It’s a unique integration of the traditional Swedish massage paired with the strategic use and placement of hot stones, allowing the heat to penetrate deep into tense and tired muscles for a rejuvenating therapeutic treatment.
Historically, hot stones warmed by fire were used by Native Americans to treat aching muscles, but the modern revival of hot stone massage is commonly credited to Mary Nelson, a native of Tucson, Arizona. She trademarked her style of hot stone massage, called LaStone Therapy, which has spiritual Native American components and requires training and certification.
The hot stones are usually made of basalt, a type of rock that is rich in iron, so they retain heat. The stones are placed in water and heated to approximately 125 ºF (52 ºC). The heat warms and relaxes the muscles, which allows the therapist to apply deeper pressure if desired or necessary. The warmth of the hot stones is said to improve circulation and calm the nervous system. Some massage therapists place stones on points that are thought to be energy centers of the body to rebalance the body and mind – restoring the patient’s equilibrium.
Many therapists believe the stones themselves have an energetic charge and that needs to be maintained by placing the stones in a full moon shape periodically.
The massage therapist ordinarily begins by applying oil to the body, which allows the hot stones to glide smoothly along the muscles. You are lying face down, and the therapist often then uses the hot stones to massage the back. You are then asked to turn over onto your back. The massage therapist may place small hot stones between your toes or in the palms of your hands and repeat the sequence.
With sessions ranging from 60 to 90 minutes, Hot Stone massage can melt away the pervading burdens of life and reinvigorate the body. /// |
